How to give a nightstand new life with DIY furniture flipping

Most pieces of furniture are designed to last, though they often fall victim to wear and tear or simply go out of style. But it’s actually pretty easy to transform old and outdated furniture into something new. In this episode of ITK: Furniture Flip, our host and expert furniture flipper, Bre Bringier (@redesignbybre), shows us how to give a bleak nightstand new life using burlap, wood trim, and a fresh paint job.

Bre’s nightstand was found secondhand on Craigslist for just $20, though it has a lackluster appeal: dark brown stain and simple, black drawer pulls. She sets out to refinish it in white with burlap accent doors. Here’s how it’s done:

1. Start by cleaning the nightstand to remove any dust or dirt that may have accumulated.

2. Remove all hardware and drawer pulls, then the entire piece of furniture with 220-grit sandpaper.

3. Use Bondo to repair any damage to the wood. To do this, shave off the damaged wood using the multitool, then fill in the gaps with Bondo, following the directions on the label. Once dry, sand the Bondo to smooth it down until it’s flat with the rest of the furniture piece.

4. Decorate the drawers with burlap: Cut the burlap to the size of the drawers, then use the lighter along each side of the burlap to remove any loose threads and smooth out the texture. Use wood glue to adhere the burlap to the drawer. Glue the wood trim pieces around the edges of the burlap.

5. Paint the dresser using the paint roller, going in one direction across. Use the paintbrush to carefully paint the wood trim.

6. Reinstall the hardware and drawer pulls. You can paint them before installing.
